On 8 May, China’s Xinhua news agency carried a report on the deepening of relations between China and Suriname. Twelve days later, on 20 May, the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, an independent agency of the US government, held a hearing on China’s advancing interests in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) which revealed the continuing concerns that the US harbours about China’s actions and intentions in the region.
