Ecuador moved definitively to the right of the political spectrum on 24 May when Guillermo Lasso, a conservative former banker, was inaugurated as head of state. Lasso, however, was far less interested in the shift in ideology under his presidency than in what he described as the transit from authoritarianism to democracy. “The time of the caudillos is over,” he declared emphatically in his inaugural speech.
