In brief: DR signs agreement with World Bank to reduce emissions

* The Dominican Republic (DR) has signed an agreement with the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) which gives it access to US$25m in payments for verified carbon emissions reductions between now and 2025. These will be made through the DR’s emissions reductions programme, which aims to cut 5m tonnes of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation thanks to the emissions reduction payment agreement (ERPA) reached with the FCPF. “This agreement is a national achievement, a reason for celebration and progress in the fight against the challenges of climate change”, the DR’s deputy minister of international cooperation at the ministry for environment and natural resources, Milagros de Camps, said. According to the World Bank, the DR is the third country in Latin America and the Caribbean to have reached such a “milestone agreement” with the FCPF, after Chile and Costa Rica.
