The Mexican government has published new data on excess deaths, which appears to show that the number of fatalities produced by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is substantially higher than the official estimates from the federal health ministry (SSA). Mexico already has the world’s third highest Covid-19 death toll on the SSA’s figures, but the latest data would see it overtake Brazil as having the second highest tally. This once again brings into serious question the handling of the public health emergency by the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which maintains that its strategy for dealing with the pandemic has been successful.
