PERU: All to play for
No candidate has been able to break clear in the race for Peru’s presidency. In fact the pack is so bunched that even a small increase in support could catapult any of the 18 candidates into contention. The most fragmented vote in Peru’s history, it is necessary to combine the voting intentions of no fewer than the top seven candidates to clear the 50% threshold required to win in the first round. This reflects deep-rooted disillusionment with the political class, and the paucity of attractive options, despite the record number of candidates, but also the uncertainty of the voting public desperate to avoid electing another perceived dud.
