Worsening pandemic blights economic outlook. On 22 March, the Confederação Nacional da Indústria (CNI), a business lobby, released its latest economic outlook report, in which it notes that the cycle of economic recovery observed in the latter half of 2020 has been interrupted by the second wave of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in Brazil, which is driving a severe public health crisis. The need for isolation measures and uncertainty over both the pandemic’s evolution and the government’s response to it “consolidate the perspective of a new economic downturn, particularly in the second quarter of 2021”, the report reads.
