In brief: Chile’s economic activity plunges in January

* Chile’s central bank (BCCh) has released the latest figures for its monthly index of economic activity (Imacec), according to which economic activity slumped 3.2% year-on-year in January. This is the Imacec’s worst performance in January since records began in 1987. The BCCh says that “the fall in the activities of services and the production of goods” explains this result, somewhat compensated by retail. Commenting on the results Economy Minister Lucas Palacios acknowledged that the Imacec’s slump is bigger than expected, but noted that the seasonally-adjusted Imacec had grown 1.3% compared with December 2020, stressing that “expectations for this year remain positive, we are on the path to recovery”.
