BRAZIL: Rio gangs lash out as violent crime rates fall

A sudden wave of drug-gang violence in the city of Rio de Janeiro, which revived memories of the May 2006 attacks in São Paulo, captured headlines and television news programmes across the world. The tough response by the state government not only reestablished control over the streets but also drove one of the main gangs out of its favela stronghold. The backdrop to this episode was a significant decline in violent crime rates in Rio.
