MEXICO: Police targeted in shows of force by cartels

In October, a month when the death toll attributed to the drugs war since the beginning of the year rose to 6,835, far overtaking the annual total for 2008, law enforcement officers became the targets of attacks across the country. These attacks did not cause many fatalities, but their timing suggested that they were shows of force in response to actions by the police and army. Two drug gangs were involved: Los Zetas and La Familia Michoacana.
