Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera has conducted his fourth cabinet reshuffle since the start of his current term in 2018. As has been the case in past instances, the reshuffle is an attempt to shore up political support for a beleaguered administration, which is now struggling to control the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and its fallout. But instead of being aimed at securing opposition support for Piñera’s call for a new national agreement to overcome the current situation [WR-20-21], the cabinet changes appear to be more designed to maintain cohesion within the centre-right ruling Chile Vamos coalition.
