EL SALVADOR | Slight decline in homicides. El Salvador's official forensics centre, the Instituto de Medicina Legal (IML), reports that there were 2,677 reported homicides in the first nine months of this year, 9.5% fewer than in the same period of 2006 and 5.3% down on 2005. It is not surprising that this improvement has failed to affect public perceptions, however: to use the media's favourite yardstick, the decline means that the daily average has fallen to 9.8 homicides a day, from 10.8 in 2006 and 10.4 in 2005.
