Guerrero poppy farmers put pressure on government for promised aid
On 12 October leaders of 27 peasant farmer communities in the state of Guerrero, representing some 30,000 opium poppy growers from the remote municipalities of Heliodoro Castillo and San Miguel Totolapan, condemned the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the leftist Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party for failing to deliver on its promises to support them. The poppy growers claim that the administration has not given them assistance to develop projects to effectively help them grow alternative crops to the opium poppy, which is used for illegal narcotics production, particularly heroine. The farmers threatened to step up the pressure and stage demonstrations, such as blocking roads and seizing government premises in the state capital Chilpancingo, should the administration fail to support crop substitution.
