GUYANA: CCJ orders new elections
Guyana’s President David Granger suffered a sharp reverse on 18 June as the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) upheld a parliamentary vote of no confidence in his A Partnership for National Unity (Apnu) coalition government last December, triggering fresh elections. Granger had received a lifeline in March, when Guyana’s Court of Appeal overturned the vote of no confidence but the opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) appealed to the CCJ, whose ruling is final. Granger accepted the outcome but is now engaged in a political tussle with the leader of the PPP/C, long-serving former president Bharrat Jagdeo (1999-2011), over when the general elections should be held.
