* Brazil’s culture ministry (Minc) has announced that the federal government will immediately release R$10m (US$2.4m) in funds for the emergency restructuring of the Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro, the country’s oldest museum that was devastated by a fire on the night of 2 September. The fire, the cause of which is still unknown, destroyed over 90% of the museum’s collection, which included items such as Latin America’s largest collection of Egyptian mummies and the 12,000-year old skeleton of a young woman. Authorities have lamented the loss that this represents for Brazilian history and culture. A further R$5m will be later destined to the elaboration of a project on the recovery of the museum’s archive. The federal government has also announced the creation of a financial support network, with national banks and private companies manifesting their interest in contributing to the restoration of the museum.
