GUATEMALA: Highest murder rate in the city

In Guatemala city there are, on average, 2.6 violent killings a day. The national rate is of 101 per 100,000 inhabitants (compared with 90 in El Salvador and 50 in Honduras). Firearms were used last year in 92% of reported violent crimes.

One of the most disquieting features of this is the high proportion (28%) of under-18s among the victims - partly the result of 'cleansing' drives by vigilantes, partly of conflict between gangs. In June alone, 71 children and youths were murdered, taking the total so far this year to 373. If this rate is not curbed, the annual total for this year will be 86% higher than in 2002, which in turn was 12% higher than in 2001.
