José Antonio Meade registered as a presidential pre-candidate for the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) at a large gathering of senior party officials and members on 3 December. The fanfare surrounding the event confirmed that Meade will not face an internal challenge. Meade’s unopposed ascension to the PRI candidacy has put the opposition coalition Frente Ciudadano por México (FCM) on the back foot.
