Significance: The result of the all-important elections in Edomex, where the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) is bidding to retain its ironclad grip on the governorship in face of strong opposition, remains in doubt with the count as close as opinion polls suggested. The official provisional electoral count (Prep) was barely underway before both the PRI and the radical left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), led by twice former presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador, were declaring victory. A rapid count and the Prep, however, indicate that the PRI’s candidate for Edomex governor, Alfredo del Mazo Maza, won by a whisker. Victory would be a huge relief for the PRI in its main electoral stronghold.
