Mexico’s right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) was installed by many political commentators as the early favourite to regain the presidency in 2018 after June’s gubernatorial, state legislative and municipal elections. This was not only due to the PAN’s impressive showing in these elections but also to the chastening defeats inflicted on the federally ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) which lost control of a handful of states for the first time in its history.
