PERU | Amazon dispute. Paul Michael John Thomas McAuley, a Roman Catholic priest whose expulsion from Peru was announced by the interior ministry last week on the grounds that he was fomenting unrest in the Amazon and conspiring against the State [WR-10-27], has won a stay order. It was granted by a court in Iquitos, the capital of the jungle state of Loreto near Ecuador where McAuley has run his civil association Red Ambiental Loretana since 2006. McAuley will now fight the expulsion order. The interior ministry had given him until 8 July to leave Peru, and the prime minister, Javier Velásquez, claimed that the decision was irrevocable.
