Peru’s First Lady faces corruption probe

Development: On 2 February a Peruvian prosecutor launched a preliminary investigation into First Lady Nadine Heredia and her brother, Ilan, for asset laundering and illicit enrichment.

Significance: The investigation into Heredia is further bad news for President Ollanta Humala so soon after his government was dealt a serious setback in congress when its youth employment law was struck down by opposition legislators and even members of the ruling Gana Perú coalition. The opposition Fujimorista Fuerza Popular (FP) is also calling for congress to investigate Heredia, who is president of the left-wing Partido Nacionalista Peruano (PNP), the rump of Gana Perú. The PNP issued a statement accusing certain parties of being intent on generating “political noise” to “tarnish the image” of Heredia and undermine a potential electoral bid in 2016.
