Closing the gender gap. Last week the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF) released its annual Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI) which ranked Nicaragua within the top 10 countries in the world in relation to efforts to close the gender gap in economic, political, education and health-based criteria. Ranking 10th out of 136 countries, Nicaragua was the only country from the Latin America and Caribbean region to hold a top 10 spot in the rankings, a significant improvement on the position of 90th registered in 2007, the year that the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government of President Daniel Ortega came to power for a second time. While one place down from 2012, Nicaragua still registered an improved score overall and is well ahead of its Central American neighbours: Costa Rica ranked 31st; Panama, 37th; Honduras, 82nd; El Salvador, 96th, and Guatemala came in 114th.
