HONDURAS | Violence. Honduras is suffering from an alarming increase in violence, according to a recent report by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH). The official murder toll was 4,473 in 2008, up 25.5% on 2007, the report claims. This is the equivalent of a homicide rate of 57.9 per 100,000, in a population of only seven million. Some 80.4% of all homicides occurred in the 15-44 age bracket. Men (particularly young men) remain the most vulnerable group, accounting for 93% of all homicides. Similar to previous years, 78% of homicides were the result of fire-arms, with 16% caused by knives and other weapons.
