The Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government of President Daniel Ortega last week hailed Washington’s announcement that it would extend its property waiver for Nicaragua for another year – a move which circumvents legislation instructing the US to oppose assistance from international financial institutions for governments that confiscate the property of US citizens. As was the case last year, this followed the US’s refusal to renew its fiscal transparency waiver for Nicaragua amid transparency concerns. The authorisation of the property waiver – which has much more significant economic implications for the Nicaraguan government – again highlights the strength of bilateral cooperation (particularly in the areas of trade and security) despite professed US concern at President Ortega’s perceived anti-democratic tendencies.End of preview - This article contains approximately 761 words.
