Development: On 17 June, during an official three day visit to Taiwan, President Otto Pérez Molina said that Guatemala’s plans for an inter-oceanic corridor (Corredor Interoceánico de Guatemala [CIG]) linking the Pacific and Atlantic were more advanced than a similar inter-oceanic canal project in Nicaragua, for which a Chinese company last week received a US$40bn concession from the left-wing government led by President Daniel Ortega.
