A large-scale police operation on 3 March moved into two groups of favelas in the Zona Norte, the Complexo do Caju in São Cristóvão (between two of the main access avenues to the city) and the Barreira do Vasco in the port area, where Rio’s 31st ‘pacification unit’ (UPP) is being installed.
