PARAGUAY: Paraguay suspension fuels heated debate

“They are a bunch of cretins for the main… They opposed Venezuela (entering Mercosur) and wanted a bribe. It’s shameful… The fact that they have that attitude is a problem for the country; they should be shot.” Straight-talking is clearly not the preserve of President José Mujica in Uruguay. This verbal sally aimed at Paraguayan senators was made by Julio Marenales, head of the Movimiento de Liberaciόn Nacional-Tupamaros (MLN-T) in Uruguay’s ruling left-wing Frente Amplio (FA). It shows how heated the debate over the express impeachment of Paraguay’s President Fernando Lugo last month and the subsequent post-haste suspension of Paraguay and admittance of Venezuela into the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) has become.
