MEXICO: New count puts drug-war fatalities higher

The toll of drug-war deaths in Mexico is higher than anyone had so far counted, according to a study published by the Tijuana newspaper Zeta. It has counted 71,804 fatalities between 1 January 2007 and 30 April 2012. This compares with the 42,357 calculated by the newspaper Reforma in its much-cited ‘Ejecutómetro’ for a roughly equivalent period and the 47,515 reported by the government up to September 2011 (the last time it released statistics on this matter).
