The main opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) is odds on to triumph in presidential elections on 1 July but the party could win much more than just the keys to Los Pinos. The performance of its presidential candidate Enrique Peña Nieto could help the PRI secure a congressional majority and should help the party deliver some telling blows to its rivals in key gubernatorial elections too, notably Jalisco. The PRI is in a win-win situation as regards state elections: it holds 18 of the 32 state governorships and yet it will only have to defend two of these, while the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) is likely to lose two out of three it holds but is having to contest.
