Sánchez Cerén ends speculation. On 25 June El Salvador’s Vice-President and Education Minister Salvador Sánchez Cerén confirmed that he will head up the presidential ticket for the left-wing ruling Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) in the 2014 election. The announcement comes despite the March 2012 legislative and municipal elections which suggest that the electorate is unlikely to back a hard-line FMLN candidate – as illustrated in the thumping defeat of Schafik Handal, the son of the deceased FMLN leader of the same name, in San Salvador’s mayoral election by Norman Quijano, the candidate for the main right-wing Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena).
