GUATEMALA: Pérez Molina steps up reliance on the military

Celebration of a continuing decline in violent crime in Guatemala has been marred by an unclear incident that prompted the first recourse to a local state of emergency by the government of President Otto Pérez Molina. Concern is also being aired about what some describe as the ‘militarisation’ of public security and the perceived use of the security forces to protect business interests from social unrest.
