At a time when the legitimacy of President Daniel Ortega’s new administration continues to raise doubts, his push for green energy remains one of his few policies to receive both domestic and international plaudits. A recent report by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on 26 countries in Latin America & the Caribbean ranked Nicaragua second only to Brazil for green energy production. This serves once again to highlight how under Ortega, whose previous government (2007-2012) made the issue a priority, Nicaragua is set to go from being the most oil-dependent nation in Central America, to challenging the green credentials of Costa Rica, which currently produces more than 90% of energy from renewable sources.
