COLOMBIA: Bloody week in eastern Colombia

If confrontations between the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) and the state security forces were defined as a ‘tit for tat’, the latter’s ‘tat’ over the past week has been much stronger than the guerrillas’ initial ‘tit’. On 17 March, the Farc’s tenth front, which operates in the eastern border department of Arauca, ambushed the Colombian army’s 16th energy & road battalion in the rural municipality of Arauquita, killing 11 soldiers – most of them young recruits who averaged 19 years of age. The security forces responded with two separate operations in the departments of Arauca and Meta, killing a total of 69 guerrillas, including several mid-level commanders.
