A tale of two economies

Although the supply side of the economy has clearly slowed down, the demand side is powering on. The official Instituto Brasileiro de Geografía e Estadísticas (Ibge) reported that the volume of retail sales increased 6.7% in 2011. Another sign that Brazilian consumers still have the spending bit between their teeth is the increase in the import bill in January 2012. Imports were up 12.3% year-on-year over January 2011, while exports were up just 1.3%.
