Chicken: The government announced on 15 September that it would begin importing 1,152 tonnes of chicken, tariff-free, from the US, in order to keep prices down. The move prompted an angry response from the powerful private sector lobby Cosep. After talks between Cosep and the government, the latter agreed that once the first shipment (which was already en route) had arrived, the measure would be suspended. In a further gesture to the private sector, the government lifted restrictions on exporting red beans, in place since September 2010, also aimed at keeping prices low.
