Trinidad & Tobago recently hosted the third China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum. Yielding not only the promise of US$2bn in Chinese funds for regional use but also a string of bilateral agreements, the summit served as the latest sign of the way in which Beijing is stepping up cooperation in the face of economic uncertainty afflicting the region’s traditional sources of investment, the US and Europe. China’s interest in the Caribbean is also no doubt spurred by the hope of convincing remaining diplomatic allies of Taiwan (of which there are six in the region – Belize, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts & Nevis and Saint Vincent & the Grenadines) to defect.
