On 21 September President Felipe Calderón followed up stern comments from his attorney general Marisela Morales, published in an interview on 19 September, by making his first public comment on the US’s botched ‘Fast & Furious’ sting operation. Fast & Furious has become a growing scandal in the US since revelations about the operation first appeared in the US press in March 2011. Given that guns from Fast & Furious have been recovered from a large number of crime sites, including those where at least 150 Mexican and two US agents have been murdered, Calderón’s comment that Fast & Furious had been a “massive mistake [error garrafal]” was mild. His comment, nevertheless, points to a tougher, possibly more pro-Republican line, in Mexican foreign policy over the final 15 months of Calderón’s administration.
