COLOMBIA: Santos faces ultimate security test in October

The 30 October regional elections in Colombia are heating up, and in more ways than one. At least two leading organisations that monitor conflicts and crises in the country have warned that violence could escalate in the lead up to, and during, election day; some political parties are struggling to meet the requirements of the landmark political reform sanctioned by President Juan Manuel Santos on 14 July to ensure that the candidates they promote do not have links to former paramilitaries; and the Bogotá race is becoming so confusing that even local experts need index cards to keep up with who represents what.
