The three candidates competing for the governorship of the Estado de México held their first TV debate on 8 June. The debate, according to the opinion polls, was won convincingly by Alejandro Encinas, the candidate from the left-wing alliance led by the Partido de la Revolución Democática (PRD). According to snap polls after the debate Encinas was seen as the winner by twice as many people as thought the opinion poll favourite, Eruviel Avila, from the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), had won, and almost seven times as many who thought that the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) candidate, Luis Felipe Bravo, had won.
