SURINAME: Bouterse absorbs Boedhoe blow

Suriname's finance minister, Wonnie Boedhoe, resigned on 10 June citing the habitual euphemism of "personal reasons". Her resignation is a blow to President Desi Bouterse for several reasons. Firstly she was one of only two female ministers in his male-dominated cabinet. Secondly, she was the only independent in the cabinet; an experienced technocrat, Boedhoe could rise above party political infighting within Bouterse's heterogeneous ruling coalition Mega Combinatie. Bouterse attempted to fill Boedhoe's shoes by appointing another experienced female economist in her place. But, unlike Boedhoe, the new broom, Adeline Wijnerman, is an eminently political figure, belonging to Bouterse's Nationale Democratische Partij (NDP).
