COSTA RICA | Drop in poverty. The percentage of the population living in poverty declined from 20.2% in 2006 to 16.7% in 2007, according to a survey by the national statistics institute (INE). Of this, 3.3% live in extreme poverty, down from 5.3% last year. The poverty line for Costa Rica is calculated at a monthly income of just over 54,000 colones (around US$105) per person while those described as living in extreme poverty receive under 24,844 colones (US$50) a month. Unemployment dropped from 6% in 2006 to 4.6% this year, with the workforce currently accounting for 46.5% of the total population.
