Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías was born on 28 July 1954 in Sabaneta in the western state of Barinas. His parents, both schoolteachers, sent him to the Venezuelan Military Academy in Caracas in the mid-1960s. He graduated with a degree in Military Sciences and the rank of second lieutenant in 1975. Staying on at the academy throughout the next 15 years, he specialized and excelled in the study of engineering and military armour. After receiving a master's degree in politics from the Simón Bolívar University in 1990, he trained to become a commando and reached the rank of colonel in 1992. Chávez married twice, but separated from both wives; he has a total of five children.
