President Alvaro Uribe exchanged vicious insults with three of the most senior opposition leaders this week as the parapolitical scandal crept closer to his family. The trigger for Uribe's outburst on national radio was the announcement by Senator Gustavo Petro, of the Polo Democrático Alternativo (PDA), that in March he would begin a debate on the extent of the infiltration of the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) into public life in the department of Antioquia, where Uribe was governor between 1995 and 1997.
