Alternative to FTA requested. The summit of the rump Andean Community (CAN) held in Lima last week produced a formal request to the US for the extension of the ATPDEA, the drugs-linked trade preferences regime which expires at the end of this year. Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo said he had agreed to support this request in order to assist countries like Bolivia (which has not negotiated a full FTA) and Ecuador (whose FTA negotiations have been suspended by Washington in reprisal for the voiding of Oxy's contract). Peru and Colombia, he said, do not really need that extension.
