Ricardo Pascoe Pierce, Mexico's ambassador to Cuba between December 2000 and October 2002, has published a book documenting his experiences in Cuba and arguing that a power struggle is taking place between President Fidel Castro and his brother, Raúl.In the 500-page work entitled En el filo (On the Brink), the leftist politician describes his days in Havana, where he avoided members of the opposition and human rights leaders in an attempt to build good relations with the Cuban government. Pascoe records how he tried to discourage Jorge Castañeda, Mexico's former foreign minister, from supporting a United Nations Human Rights Commission resolution criticising Cuba's human rights record. But despite Pascoe's initial support for the Castro government, by the end of the book the former ambassador admits that he noticed Castro's repression and government hypocrisy.
