SURINAME: Election plunged into uncertainty

The process of electing Suriname's new president took two unexpected twists last week. First, former dictator Desi Bouterse withdrew from the race just before the national assembly convened to vote. Next, after a first inconclusive vote, proceedings were halted to consider a bid to disqualify Bouterse's replacement, Rabin Parmessar. If this bid prospers the decision may not have to go before the broader united people's assembly and President Runaldo Venetiaan could find himself enjoying another term.
