Textiles survive lifting of quotas. Exports of textiles and apparel in the first four months of the year totalled US$565m, or 11% more than in the same period of last year. The increase in export earnings is almost entirely due to greater value added by companies that remained competitive after the lifting of the textile quota system. Many firms did not make it: the Gremial de Vestuarios y Textiles de Guatemala (Vestex) reports that since the beginning of the year 21 plants have shut down, with the loss of about 3,500 jobs.
