Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the mayor of Mexico city and the most likely presidential candidate in 2006, appears to have become fed up with the speculation. He announced last week that he was prepared to sign a written declaration that he would not run in 2006. The only condition was that the declaration should be drawn up by Carlos Salinas, the disgraced former President, Roberto Madrazo, the current leader of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), which is the biggest party in congress, and Diego Fernández de Cevallos, a prominent member of the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN).
The letter López Obrador wants them to draw up, apparently, will not commit them to giving up their aspirations for 2006. López Obrador claimed that he just wants to get rid of the speculation and focus on his work in Mexico city.
López Obrador's dramatic gesture of surrendering his 2006 ambitions has startled political commentators as well as ordinary people. Websites ask whether people believe López Obrador is serious.
