Chile's finance minister, Nicolás Eyzaguirre, is backing away from his officials' assertions that economic growth this year will be at least 4%. He says that the Chilean economy has been affected by the slowdown in the US and China and will be affected by the virtual recession in Brazil. With this in mind, he expects the economy to grow this year by between 3% and 4%. This is in line with what the central bank has been forecasting.
Eyzaguirre adds that the better the US did, the more likely Chile is to approach the top of the range -but as there are few signs of the US economy picking up pace, growth in Chile is likely to be around 3.5% this year.
