On 25 April the Venezuelan opposition held primaries to select
candidates for the 26 September elections to the unicameral National Assembly
(AN). The opposition, which boycotted the last legislative vote in 2005, a major
tactical error, is hoping to make important inroads in the AN this year, fuelled
by rising public disillusion with the government of President Hugo Chávez ,
particularly over the deteriorating economy. Despite these shifting sands,
logistically it won't be easy - a recent redrawing of the electoral boundaries
will favour President Chávez 's ruling Partido Unido Socialista de Venezuela
