POLITICS & ENVIRONMENT: Morales under pressure over 'extractivist' policy

Once again, the contradictions inherent in President Evo Morales's declared economic priority of developing Bolivia's extractive industries while professing a commitment to the environment emerged this month over its response to mining protests. Uncomfortably for the government, the protests also coincided with Bolivia's hosting of the “World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth", its latest effort to serve as global rallying point for greater action on climate change.
